Boy Critical After Skateboard Fall Without Helmet
A 14-year-old Irvine boy was listed in critical condition after falling off his skateboard while being pulled by another teenager riding a bicycle, authorities said.
Irvine police said the youth, whose name was not released, lost control of his skateboard as he held onto the shoulder of his 15-year-old companion and tumbled headfirst.
The Orange County Fire Authority took the boy to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he underwent surgery. He was listed in critical condition late Friday.
According to Irvine Traffic Sgt. Denney Jenner, the teenager was not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred.
“We just want to get the word out about how important it is to wear a helmet,” Jenner said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re on a bicycle or a skateboard.”
The accident happened about noon at the corner of Dewey and Farragut avenues. The teenager on the bicycle was uninjured.
