Police said a man was shot during an exchange of gunfire at a hotel near Van Nuys Airport early Sunday.

The shots were fired in the parking lot and through the first floor of Airtel Plaza Hotel in the 7200 block of Valjean Avenue about 3:30 a.m., said Los Angeles Police Sgt. Richard Thomas. Jonathan Mistofsky, who is in his early 20s, was hit in the back and suffered a minor injury. He was taken to Providence Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills, Thomas said.

Police couldn’t say Sunday whether Mistofsky was a bystander or a participant in the shootout.

Stray bullets damaged furnishings in several vacant hotel rooms, Thomas said.

Police questioned witnesses at the hotel who said the gunmen were members of a gang from the Foothill area, but no arrests were made.
