Weatherspoon Basket Beats the Clock, Fairfax

Alexis Weatherspoon’s eight-foot baseline jumper off a rebound with five seconds remaining gave host Grant High a 66-65 victory over Fairfax in the first round of the City Championship girls’ basketball playoffs Friday.

Weatherspoon, who scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half, had 11 rebounds and six steals.

Leslie Mui and Krystal Clay each scored 20 for Grant (20-6), which trailed by 17 points midway through the third quarter.

Chatsworth 44, Locke 40--Freshman Summer Johnson scored seven of her 11 points in the fourth quarter and the Chancellors (20-5) won at Chatsworth.

South Gate 51, Kennedy 35--Sophomore Linnae Barber had nine points and her sister Jennifer Barber had seven points and eight steals for Kennedy (15-8) at South Gate.

Crenshaw 85, Taft 43--Denisha McCoy had 14 points and Oreeille Revish had 10 points for Taft, but the Toreadors (15-7) were eliminated in a City championship game at Crenshaw.

Reseda 51, North Hollywood 44--Andrea Bermas scored 17 points, Kristin Armendariz added 14 and Nayely Jimenez had 10 and the No. 15-seeded Regents surprised second-seeded North Hollywood (16-10) in a first-round game at North Hollywood.

Monroe 60, Carson 48--Shakira Jones and Maral Karaccusian each scored 12 points for host Monroe (18-8).

Birmingham 38, Jefferson 35--Octavia Askew had 15 points and six steals for host Birmingham (10-11).

L.A. Marshall 67, Canoga Park 51--Elizabeth Hernandez, Julianka Perez and Tiffany Saunders each scored 14 points for Canoga Park, but the Hunters (13-11) lost at Marshall.
