Northridge Comeback Sends UCLA to Defeat in Volleyball

Cal State Northridge rallied from an eight-point deficit in the fourth game to shock UCLA, 15-9, 15-13, 10-15, 16-14, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match Thursday night at UCLA.

The Matadors (4-5, 2-4) trailed, 13-5, in the fourth game but came back to defeat the Bruins (11-3, 5-3) for the first time since 1992.

SOFTBALL

Fresno State 1, Northridge 0--Sarah Farnworth’s one-hitter was not enough for the Matadors at the San Diego State softball tournament as Amanda Scott pitched a no-hitter for the Bulldogs.

Angela Cervantes scored an unearned in the second inning on Lindsay Fossati’s sacrifice fly for the Bulldogs (5-1), ranked No. 3 in the nation. Scott (4-0) struck out four and walked one.

Scott’s perfect game was spoiled in the third inning when Pam West allowed a passed ball on strike three to Jodi Borenstein.

Farnworth (1-3) struck out three and walked two for Northridge (2-3-1).

BASEBALL

Chapman 8, Cal Lutheran 7--Tony Serna’s run-scoring single off Chris Barbettini in the ninth inning gave the Panthers a nonconference victory at Cal Lutheran.

Tom Galante had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs, and Eric Medina hit a three-run home run for the Kingsmen (3-2), who trailed, 6-0, but took a 7-6 lead in the fifth.

The Master’s 8, University of British Columbia 4--Mike Ploharz pitched eight scoreless innings to improve to 3-0 and Andy Salazar had two hits for Master’s.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 56, Concordia 51--Freshman guard Lesley DuBois scored 14 of her 17 points in the second half for host Master’s in a nonconference game.

DuBois made two three-point baskets and grabbed eight rebounds for the Mustangs (15-13). Jenifer Bennett had 13 points.

SWIMMING

Pierce 53, Canyons 45--Kevin Fitzpatrick won three events, finishing first in the 200 individual medley and 200 breaststroke and swimming on a winning relay, for the Brahmas in a Western State Conference opener at Canyons.
