Freshman Steve Smith of Taft, seeded No. 4 in the City Championship tournament, sprained his ankle during practice earlier this week.

Smith will try to play tonight in a first-round game against visiting Sylmar.

Crespi’s disappointing season came to an end Wednesday night when the Celts were eliminated in their Division IV-AA opener by Salesian, 62-58. Salesian was the fifth-place finisher from the Santa Fe League.

Crespi (13-14) was ranked No. 4 in The Times’ preseason rankings, but the Celts never showed the form that helped them to a 19-9 record last season.

It has been a difficult sports year for Crespi. The football team went 1-9, the soccer team failed to make the playoffs and the basketball season is now over.
