Elian Gonzalez
I hail the attempts by our federal lawmakers to pass legislation that would make Elian Gonzalez a U.S. citizen. But why set our sights so low? Why not legislate that all Cuban children are U.S. citizens? For if this Cuban boy is better off with his distant relatives in the U.S. than with his father and grandparents in Cuba, then why not clear the way for all children in Cuba (or perhaps in any poor communist country) to be raised by freedom-loving Americans instead of their closest kin?
