Miller Gets OK for Trials

Shannon Miller, winner of a record seven Olympic gymnastics medals, will compete in the U.S. trials this week in Boston after showing in a mock meet that she has recovered from a hairline crack in her right leg.

“I’m extremely excited for Shannon,” said her longtime coach, Steve Nunno. “She has gone through a regular, grueling Olympic cycle these last nine months. The highs, the lows, the injuries.”

Two other gymnasts, Jeanette Antolin and Amanda Stroud, also were cleared. A fourth, Robin Phelps, withdrew because of an Achilles’ injury.

Becky Ruehl, a U.S. Olympic diver in 1996, is retiring from competition after finishing second to Olympic-bound Laura Wilkinson in the 10-meter platform event at the U.S. National Outdoor Diving Championships in Mission Viejo.

Tennis

Top-seeded Andre Agassi overwhelmed Brazil’s Fernando Meligeni, 6-2, 6-1, to advance to the third round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic at Washington.

Third-seeded Nicolas Kiefer won 10 of the final 12 games against wild-card entry Guillermo Coria to advance, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Fifth-seeded Nathalie Tauziat was upset, 6-4, 6-1, by unseeded Anne Kremer at the du Maurier Open in Montreal. In other matches, Anke Huber, seeded sixth, beat Sarah Pitkowski, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4; and Magdalena Maleeva ousted Sonya Jeyaseelan, 6-1, 6-0.

Dawn Buth of Riverdale, N.Y., and Kevin Kim of Fullerton were the first players to earn singles wild cards into the main draw of the U.S. Open. They did so by their performances on the USTA’s developmental tour.

Boxing

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson probably will fight Andrew Golota on Oct. 20 in Detroit in a meeting of boxers with reputations for breaking the rules of the ring.

Tyson, 34, was disqualified from a 1997 bout after biting the ears of Evander Holyfield. Golota, 32, bit Samson Po’uha during a 1995 bout and was twice disqualified against Riddick Bowe for low blows.

An agreement was reached for Lennox Lewis to defend the World Boxing Council-International Boxing Federation heavyweight titles against David Tua on Nov. 11 in either Toronto or Las Vegas.

Jurisprudence

Utah Jazz rookie DeShawn Stevenson was charged with a misdemeanor count of fighting in a Clovis, Calif., high school brawl on June 28, the night he was drafted. Also charged was Fresno State football recruit Christopher Lee Sims, 18.

Soccer

Mexico was helped when Canada’s Paul Fenwick headed the ball into his own net on a free kick in the 81st minute and was a 2-0 winner in second-round qualifying for the 2002 World Cup. . . . Chile upset Brazil, 3-0, at Santiago, Chile, sending Brazil to only its third-ever loss in World Cup qualifying--its second this year. . . . In another World Cup qualifier, Costa Rica beat Guatemala, 2-1.

FIFA has lifted a ban on the use of Zimbabwe National Stadium, where 13 people were killed in a stampede last month during a game against South Africa, for international matches.

Auto Racing

Todd Bodine will race in Sunday’s Pepsi 400 at Michigan Speedway in place of Terry Labonte, who is still recovering from the aftereffects of two wrecks in July.

NASCAR fined Ricky Rudd’s crew chief Michael McSwain $10,000 for car violations at last week’s Global Crossing at the Glen race.

Miscellany

In his first competition in more than a year, Cuban high jumper Javier Sotomayor made a confidence-boosting comeback from a suspension for cocaine use by leaping 7 feet 5 3/4 inches to win at the International Track Meet of Montauban, France.

The Lakers have signed 6-foot-10 Stanislav Medvedenko, a member of the Ukrainian national team. . . . Colorado Avalanche forward Adam Deadmarsh agreed to a long-term contract, the terms of which were unavailable.
