an order for a sub?
Even with Westside real estate at a premium, it can’t be an easy sell. Sure, the two-story restaurant is in a great location with lots of foot traffic--but what about those portholes?
True to its name, Dive! restaurant in Century City has submerged, its doors closing in January. The submarine-themed restaurant, replete with steel hatches, periscopes and flashing red lights, “was under-performing,” says David Hoemann, a marketing manager for the Chicago-based Levy Restaurant Corp., which backed the endeavor along with investors Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg. “We were hoping for the hip, low-key crowd we are now drawing in Las Vegas, but instead we got an upscale group that wasn’t a good match.”
Rumor has it that the sub might resurface, albeit under Austrian colors: Sources at the Century City Marketplace say Wolfgang Puck has his eye on das Boot and hopes to begin reconstruction this summer. Puck’s people will neither confirm nor deny reports.
If Puck’s alleged venture capsizes, maybe Spielberg and Katzenberg should reconsider: We hear DreamWorks is looking for office space.
