Bill on Memorial Registry Advances
Legislation to create a statewide registry of veterans’ memorials has been approved by a Senate committee, said state Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), who drafted the bill.
The registry would provide the public with information on the locations and status of veterans’ memorials throughout the state.
There are more than 500 such memorials in California, but many haven’t been maintained because their locations are unknown. The bill would catalog the memorials, and the list would be accessible on the California Department of Veterans Affairs’ Web site.
“This registry will help draw public attention to the memorials in hundreds of communities that honor those who have served our country,” Schiff said.
No other state has compiled a complete list of veterans’ memorials, according to Schiff.
“California has the opportunity to lead the way in recognizing the service of the [state’s] war heroes,” said Brian Rooney, director of the Disabled Veterans Business Enterprise.
