KEADING MEN
J.R. REDMOND
Running back, Arizona State
You have to wonder what “altared” state--well, actually Nevada--Redmond was in during a bizarre sequence of events that led to him getting a one-game NCAA suspension Friday. Seems Redmond developed a relationship with a female student who worked part-time in the Arizona State athletic department--let’s call it backfield in motion. She allowed Redmond to use her cell phone, but after several calls, told him that he was in violation of NCAA rules and the only way to resolve the problem was to marry her. Caught in a trap he couldn’t get out of, Redmond somehow took time out from his heavy academic schedule to tie the knot in Las Vegas. (Dennis Rodman apparently wasn’t in town to serve as best man). The phone scam--and marriage--unraveled quicker than Arizona State’s last two football seasons. Part of a pending divorce settlement is Redmond’s future earnings--which means she probably had him higher in her mock draft than Mel Kiper Jr. By the way, Redmond missed practice this week with a migraine headache. Wonder how he got that?
Saturday: Probably listened to Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called to Say I Love You.”
Season: 739 yards rushing, payments of $418 for cellular phone bills and $173 for plane trip to Las Vegas.
Next: A return trip to Lost Wages.
