A local businessman has been charged with illegally telemarketing computer printer toner, Los Angeles City Atty. Jim Hahn announced Friday.

Doran Amir, 36, operator of Direct Imaging Systems in Chatsworth, is to appear in Los Angeles Municipal Court on Nov. 18, officials said. Amir could not be reached for comment Friday.

Amir is charged in a criminal complaint with three counts each of operating as a telemarketer without proper registration and without maintaining a $100,000 bond. Additionally, he is charged with two counts of making false and misleading statements to potential customers.

If convicted on all charges, Amir could face a total of 2 1/2 years in jail and $22,500 in fines, officials said.

Amir became the subject of an investigation by the U.S. Postal Service after the Federal Trade Commission received a complaint from a Houston medical services company, officials said.

Postal inspectors contend that a Direct Imaging Systems representative claimed to be with Minolta when attempting a telephone sale with an employee of the Houston company, officials said. Direct Imaging Systems is also accused of shipping unordered computer printer toner.
