A photographic exhibit illustrating the history of El Monte’s eight old Latino neighborhoods is on display at the city’s historic society this month.

“El Monte Memories De Mi Barrio” depicts family and community life of Mexican Americans in the cities of El Monte and South El Monte, said Ernest G. Gutierrez, president of La Historia Society.

The exhibit, which runs through Nov. 4, illustrates the social, cultural, religious and economic contributions of Mexican Americans in greater El Monte, he said.

“This gives the younger generation an idea what was here in the old days,” Gutierrez said. “Today, only one of these neighborhoods exists. The rest have been redeveloped.”

Many of the photographs come from the personal collections of current and former residents, he said.

The exhibit at 3150 N. Tyler Ave is open 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily except Fridays, when it is closed.
