ROUNDUP : Valencia Dominates Sunny Hills
Valencia dominated on both sides of the ball and defeated Sunny Hills, 45-0, in a nonleague game Friday at Buena Park High.
The Tigers’ defense, led by Cam Hokanson, Ryan Swearingen and Brad Bartczak, forced five turnovers and recorded four sacks.
Valencia (4-1) held Sunny Hills to 55 total yards offense. Sunny Hills (2-3) did not register a first-down in the second half.
“This was a big game for us,” Valencia Coach Mike Marrujo said. “Last week [against Kennedy] we turned the ball over five times and were penalized nine times. We needed to play a solid game to get ready for league.’
Valencia running back Scott Parker rushed for 106 yards in 23 carries and quarterback Brian Bartczak completed 10 of 18 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns.
Midway through the first quarter, Valencia’s Keith Allen kicked a 22-yard field goal to start the Tigers’ scoring.
Following a fumble recovery by defensive tackle Dan Lopez at the Sunny Hills 30, Grant Dhenin, who had 61 yards and two touchdowns in seven carries, increased Valencia’s lead to 10-0 when he scored on a one-yard run with one minute remaining in the first quarter.
Wide receiver Giovanni Alvarez-Mena caught touchdown passes of 51 and 19 yards from Brian Bartczak in the second quarter, propelling the Tigers to a commanding 24-0 lead at halftime.
