Mater Dei Rolls Past Pacifica
Two league champions from last season tipped off the girls’ basketball season Monday afternoon, and Mater Dei scored a decisive victory over Pacifica, 83-45, in pool play of the Woodbridge tournament.
Mater Dei, the co-champion of the South Coast League last season and now in the Serra League, got 20 points from Kristian Kirkpatrick and 18 from Maile Shimoda in the easy victory over the five-time defending Garden Grove League champion.
Shimoda also had eight assists.
Kyra Melville added 15 points for Mater Dei, which opened a 51-14 halftime lead.
Diana Barreras scored 14 for the Mariners.
In other tournament games:
Edison 48, Capistrano Valley 45--Michelle Zylstra made a key 18-footer, and Rachael Ziemann made two free throws with 13 seconds left, as Edison overcame a six-point deficit with 4 1/2 minutes left in the game.
Capistrano Valley’s Sarah Flanagan did make an attempt to tie the game, but her three-point shot rimmed out at the buzzer.
Zylstra led Edison in rebounds with nine.
Ziemann scored 12 points and had five assists, and her sister, Bianca, scored 11 points.
Nicky Howard had five three-pointers and totaled 19 points to lead Capistrano Valley.
Edison plays Oxnard Wednesday in pool play.
Woodbridge 64, Cerritos 46--Bryn Riley was the scoring leader for host Woodbridge with 19 points, and also led in rebounds with 13. Natalie Quinn added 11 points for the Warriors, including three three-point baskets.
In the North Orange County Tip-Off:
Kennedy 52, Garden Grove 33--Garden Grove kept it close for a half, but Kennedy outscored the Argonauts, 26-14, in the second half.
Lauren Shinto had 16 points to lead Kennedy.
Troy 72, Los Alamitos 29--Veronica Johns-Richardson scored 24 points for Troy. Stefanie Schilling added 14, including three three-pointers, and Katie Hardeman had eight steals for the Warriors in the first-round game.
In nonleague games:
Cerritos Gahr 48, Sonora 28--Mindy Clark had nine rebounds and Raena Neighbors scored six points for Sonora.
Cypress 53, Long Beach Jordan 39--Junior Remy Hitomi scored 15 points and had six assists to lead visiting Cypress.
Loara 56, Western 48--Loara opened with a 20-point first-quarter to take the lead, which it held throughout the game. Sandra Sanchez had four three-pointers for Loara.
Santa Ana Valley 58, Savanna 24--Crystal Davis scored 15 points and had 13 rebounds to lead host Santa Ana Valley.
Trabuco Hills 68, Santa Ana 26--Brooke Bartleson made four three-point shots and scored 18 points total for host Trabuco Hills.
Meghan McGovern added 14 points and Jessie Mitchell had 11 rebounds for the Mustangs.
Valencia 51, Saddleback 41--Michelle Pietka was the high scorer for Valencia with 21 points, including five three-pointers. Monica Jackley had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Tigers.
