Past Values
What moral past was Thomas Bender referring to in “The New Isolationists” (Opinion, May 2)? I do not dispute the idea that individuals are alienated in present-day suburbia, but I fail to see how societal morality has decreased since the days when Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller immortalized themselves with landmarks while perpetuating inhumane working conditions. Certainly, the liberal, “free market” ideals of today’s business pages mirror the values of Bender’s esteemed “19th century bourgeoisie.”
