Fleury Helps Avalanche Tie His Old Flames

Theo Fleury, facing Calgary for the first time since being traded to Colorado, had a goal and an assist against his former team as the Avalanche and Flames played to a 3-3 tie Tuesday night at Denver.

Derek Morris had the game-tying goal for the Flames, who ended a two-game losing streak and gained a valuable point in their bid for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Fleury, who spent 11 seasons in Calgary before being traded Feb. 28, continued his torrid scoring. He has eight goals and seven assists in seven games with the Avalanche but was unhappy with his teammates.

“The way we played wasn’t acceptable,” Fleury said. “There has to be passion. There has to be grit. We let them come through at the beginning of the game and get up two goals and, ‘Oh, geez. It’s time to play hockey.’ ”

Fleury nearly scored the game-winner with 2:03 remaining in overtime as he skated down the right side, split two defenders and slapped a shot from a bad angle, but Ken Wregget made a smothering save.

Wregget finished with 21 saves and Patrick Roy stopped 31 shots for the Avalanche, which extended its home unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2).

Phoenix 7, Edmonton 4--Robert Reichel had two goals and an assist and Keith Tkachuk had four assists as the Coyotes equaled a franchise record with six first-period goals in winning at Edmonton.

The Oilers missed a chance to move ahead of Calgary for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The line of Tkachuk, Shane Doan and Jeremy Roenick combined for eight points in the first period and 10 points overall.

Doan and Roenick each finished with a goal and two assists. Oleg Tverdovsky, Rick Tocchet and Keith Carney also scored for the Coyotes.

Ottawa 6, Pittsburgh 4--Sami Salo scored three goals for his first career hat trick as the Senators overcame a three-goal deficit and won for the first time at Pittsburgh. The Senators had been 0-13-3 at the Civic Arena since joining the NHL in 1992. They are unbeaten in their last five road games (4-0-1).

The Penguins lost a substantial lead for the second consecutive game. They led, 3-1, at Buffalo 11 minutes into the third period on Sunday and lost the game, 4-3, in overtime.

“When you have a team down and out, you’ve got to jump on them,” Pittsburgh forward Matthew Barnaby said. “You’ve got to make sure the game is out of reach.”

Philadelphia 3, Carolina 3--Martin Gelinas scored at 11:05 of the third period to help Carolina twice battle back from two-goal deficits and gain a tie at Philadelphia.

Nashville 3, Washington 2--Scott Walker scored an unassisted goal with 3:56 left to give the Predators a come-from-behind victory at Washington.
