Cost of Staples Center Increases to $375 Million

The price tag for the Staples Center has escalated to $375 million, driven up by design changes, acts of God and decisions to upgrade various amenities.

However, Tim Leiweke, president of the Staples Center and the Kings, said Thursday that construction remains on schedule for getting a certificate of occupancy Sept. 30 and hosting events shortly thereafter.

The original estimate for the cost of the arena, which will be home to the Lakers, Clippers and Kings, was $250 million. Leiweke raised that to $360 million three weeks ago.

“Every day’s a trial and tribulation,” Leiweke said. “We’ve had rain and fires [a March 8 fire involving bundles of insulation], but the staff has done a great job of coping. . . . We’ve got a chance to do something special with this building and we’re committed to that. Our owners, Fox and [Philip] Anschutz, have been unbelievable.”

King season-ticket holders will receive notification next week that season-ticket prices in the new arena will be the same as or less than at the Forum. Sales of the arena’s luxury boxes, boosted by the start of the Lakers’ season and their success, have reached 130 of 160 suites.

“[Dennis] Rodman has created interest,” Leiweke said.
