Planning commissioners last week denied permission for Nextel Communications to build a transmitter at Alton Athletic Park until the city can draft a policy regulating the devices. The action was in response to concerns from neighbors, who fear the field will become an “antenna park.”

“The city needs to set some standard,” said Bob Figeira, executive director of the Woodbridge Village Assn. “We have a strong architectural committee in Woodbridge that wouldn’t allow this. It would have to be screened.” Nextel’s 80-foot-high telecommunications tower would replace an existing field light pole and have a triangular panel with 12 antennas perched on top.
