The Traffic Commission on Thursday voted unanimously to close Wabash Avenue for a 90-day trial period in an effort to keep speeders out of the residential neighborhood. The proposal, if approved by the City Council on July 20, would call for temporary cul-de-sacs to be created on Wabash Avenue, Prospect Avenue and on 6th Street between Chestnut Street and Wabash. The portion of Wabash east of Prospect would be turned into a two-way street. At the end of the trial period, city officials will determine if permanent cul-de-sacs would decrease the number of cars and speeders on those streets.
