Capistrano Schools Shine on Stanford 9
Students in the Capistrano Unified School District built on their already high standardized test scores, while Fullerton students showed incremental gains and Los Alamitos’ posted mixed results, according to scores released Friday.
Students in Capistrano routinely beat the national average, with a few schools posting scores as high as the 80th percentile on the Stanford 9 tests.
Results are given in percentiles, ranking students against a nationally selected group of 250,000 students. By definition, the 50th percentile is the national median.
Capistrano’s average elementary school scores in spelling and math increased in each grade districtwide over the previous year. The gains were particularly prominent among math scores. Second-graders, for example, jumped 6 percentile points from last year, landing in the 71st percentile.
Associate superintendent for elementary schools Austin Buffum attributed the results to reduced class sizes.
“Smaller class sizes in the primary grades are positively impacting our students’ learning,” Buffum said in a statement released by the district.
Middle school scores districtwide showed little change over last year, with minor jumps in math scores. Three schools showed stellar math scores among sixth-graders. At Niguel Hills Middle School, for example, students scored in the 80th percentile in math.
At the high school level, districtwide average scores showed more slight declines than gains. The steepest decline was in 11th-grade reading scores, which fell from the 62nd percentile in 1998 to the 57th percentile this year.
In the Fullerton School District, students held their own on the standardized tests, showing incremental improvements in most areas.
The only glaring exception was among fourth-graders, whose average scores fell districtwide by a slight margin in every subject. At all other grade levels, students tied or beat the scores from last year.
District averages ranged from the 45th to the 66th percentile. Among students whose primary language is English, all average scores were above the national average--ranging from the 55th percentile in eighth-grade spelling to the 72nd percentile in sixth-grade math.
Most improvements were relatively small. But at Commonwealth Elementary School, second- and fifth-graders made strong gains in every subject. Pat Puleo, director of instructional support services, said administrators at Commonwealth attributed the second-grade gains to more difficult lessons.
“These are very rigorous materials, and with each year the kids are getting better and better,” Puleo said.
At Los Alamitos Unified School District, scores were a mixed bag, with younger students scoring extremely well, students in grades eight through 10 remaining the same or declining slightly, and students in the 11th grade posting a drop in reading and language skills.
Los Alamitos school board member Donna Artukovic said it was too early to pinpoint the reason for the 11th-graders’ drop in scores.
“One thing I have learned about test results is you don’t jump to conclusions . . . It’s often misinterpreted and misunderstood,” she said. “What we should be looking at is trends. . . . Sometimes you have a class that’s so bright the scores are just off the top, and sometimes you have a class that struggles a little more. If a downward trend continues, then it is something we need to look at.”
For more test scores, see pages B6 and B7. Test results for the Los Alamitos Unified School District were released too late Friday to be included and will be published Tuesday.

Capistrano, Orange Test Scores Rise
Standardized test scores increased this year at Capistrano and Orange unified school districts. Students in Capistrano routinely beat the national average, with some schools posting scores as high as the 80th percentile on the Stanford 9 tests. In Orange, every school posted gains in nearly every grade level. The following percentile listings show how pupils ranked, on average, against a nationally selected group. A score in the 99th percentile, for example, is equal to or higher than all but 1% of the comparison group’s.
