Riveting Stories Just ‘Beneath the Surface’

Known as the most vivid storyteller in the Wu-Tang Clan, the GZA/Genius provides another strong, narrative-driven collection with his third album, which is due in stores Tuesday. The New Yorker’s lyrical prowess shines brightest on “Victim,” an account of a life in which the streets are safer than the schools. Rather than go for shock value with a profanity-laced tirade, the GZA paints his dreary picture with detailed descriptions that transport you into his character’s painful existence.

Using his deep, distinctive voice to his advantage during his dense lyrical adventures, the GZA always commands attention, even when joined by charismatic guests such as Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Method Man. Substantial sonic changes give this set a much lighter feel than that of his last collection, 1995’s “Liquid Swords.” The latter was primarily produced by the RZA, who favored dark, somber soundscapes. With “Beneath the Surface,” beatsmiths Mathematics, Arabian Knight and others opt for a full-bodied sound that builds from bold string arrangements, blaring horns, less oppressive keyboards and crisper drum patterns. It’s a lively lyrical and musical journey into the world of one of hip-hop’s best orators.
