Hogarth, Steinberg Reach State Amateur Match Play

Tim Hogarth of Chatsworth shot one-over-par 73 on Tuesday at Pebble Beach Golf Links to tie for third in qualifying for match play in the 88th California Amateur golf championship.

Hogarth, who had a 72 on Monday at Spyglass Hill Golf Course, finished qualifying at 145, three strokes behind medalist and defending champion Ed Cuff Jr. of Temecula.

Cuff shot 72-70--142 and beat 16-year-old Steve Conway of Dove Canyon, who was at 73-69, with a par on the first hole of a playoff.

Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys, four-time Southern California Amateur champion, totaled 76-71--177 to qualify for match play, which begins today at Pebble Beach.

Hogarth, the 1997 medalist, will play Jason Gross of San Clemente, who finished at 83-70--153, at 7:34 a.m.

Steinberg, medalist last year, plays Brian Jones of Chico, who shot 70-81--151, at 7:55.

If both Valley players win their first two matches, they will meet in the quarterfinals Friday.

Brandon DiTullio of Thousand Oaks, who plays at UCLA, shot 82-74--156 and missed qualifying by two strokes.

Oliver Rheinfurth of Northridge totaled 78-80--158, Steve White of Glendale shot 82-79--161, Scott Bashin of Northridge was at 88-75--162 and Edward Tael of Sherman Oaks finished at 84-81--165.

WATTS GAMES

* El Camino Real High, defending City champion in boys’ soccer, has reached the quarterfinals in the L.A. Watts Summer Games.

With goalie Karl Mayr recording two shutouts and Yan Falkinstein contributing two goals, the Conquistadores won three games last weekend and will play Roosevelt at 9 a.m. Sunday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

St. Francis and Thousand Oaks are also in the quarterfinals.

In boys’ basketball, Oxnard will play Valley View at 11 a.m. Saturday at Washington High in a quarterfinal game.

The Yellowjackets, led by 6-foot-1 Ricky Hernandez, 6-1 Matt Merricks and 6-7 Nick Curtis, defeated Riverside North, 58-44.

In girls’ basketball, Crescenta Valley will play Narbonne in a quarterfinal game at 10 a.m. Saturday at L.A. Southwest College. The Falcons beat Washington, 36-33, to advance.

TENNIS

* Twins Bob and Mike Bryan of Camarillo have been selected to represent the United States in the 1999 Pan Am Games.

Pan-Am tennis competition is scheduled for July 29-Aug. 5.

BASEBALL

* Pitcher Wes Hutchison, from Burroughs High and Glendale College, has committed to Lewis and Clark.

* Chatsworth High, City Section champion, has been ranked No. 7 in Baseball America magazine’s final national high school top 50 poll.

* The Westlake Senators, playing in the 64-team USA Baseball Junior Olympics in Tucson, improved to 4-0 with a 15-2 win over the California Giants. Pitcher Greg Ramos from Sylmar struck out four and Jeff Dragicevich from Westlake and Tyler Adamczyk each had two doubles.

BOXING

* Heavyweight Lance Whitaker of Granada Hills is scheduled to return to the ring after a four-month layoff against an opponent to be determined July 25 at Harris Casino in Kansas City.

Monte Barrett, WBC Continental Americas champion, is a possible opponent for Whitaker, 18-1 with 16 knockouts. Barrett is 19-0 with 12 knockouts.

Whitaker lost a 10-round split-decision to Lou Savarese in his last fight in March at Atlantic City.

* P.J. Goossen of North Hollywood, who suffered three broken ribs and a perforated ear drum in a 10-round loss by unanimous decision last week to Hector “Macho” Camacho, might retire, his father said.

Pat Goossen, who trains his son, said the defeat was “a good indication” that the 29-year-old former IBO junior-middleweight champion might be finished fighting.

“Maybe it wasn’t meant to be for P.J. in this sport,” Pat Goossen said. “I’m going to sit down and talk with him and see how he feels about it. I think he should retire.”

Goossen, 19-2, struggled against Camacho after suffering a severe body blow in the third round.

Goossen suffered an ear injury in the fifth.

BASKETBALL

* Tito Hill, a 6-foot-4 junior point guard, has transferred to Chaminade from St. Andrews School in Boca Raton, Fla.

* Crespi, which lost center Gregg Guenther to Taft, is picking up 6-2 junior transfer Kingsley Anyanwu, a member of Taft’s 18-0 junior varsity.

* Errol Garnett has been selected girls’ coach at Glendale High.

* Brian Freeth, who played at Thousand Oaks High and Hancock College, has signed with Holy Names College in Oakland.

FOOTBALL

* Quarterback Johnathan Thompson of Palmdale High has committed to University of San Diego.

* Receiver Brian Pritchett, of Hart High and College of the Canyons, will play next season at New Mexico as a recruited walk-on.
