Funeral services will be held today for a 17-year-old Granada Hills High School honor student who was killed Saturday in a car accident near Los Angeles International Airport.

Robert St. George died early Saturday when the Ford Mustang in which he was a passenger was sliced in two as the result of a chain-reaction crash in the 9600 block of Sepulveda Boulevard, police said. Three other Granada Hills High students suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Services for St. George will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Old North Church at Forest Lawn Mortuary in the Hollywood Hills.

St. George, one of the top students in this year’s graduating class, was the second Granada Hills High student to die in May in a traffic accident. The campus is still reeling from the May 15 death of junior Emily Pilkinton, after an accident in Porter Ranch. Neither case involved alcohol or reckless driving, authorities said. Principal Kathleen Rattay told the student body of St. George’s death Tuesday morning. Special counseling services were provided for those who needed them.

St. George, who was bound for UC Berkeley, was described as “a scholar and an intellect,” by Assistant Principal Julia Howelman.

She said St. George had a grade point average “well above” 4.0 and was the type of student who never missed a class.

“He was the one of the best students we’ve had here, but at the same time he was able to draw people in from all across the school--all of the different groups here . . . He was just a neat, neat kind of kid,” Howelman said.
