IRVINE
The City Council donated another $200,000 to the anti-El Toro airport fight Tuesday night, with another $75,000 expected to be allocated in coming weeks. But another airport issue was left untouched.
Penciled in on the preliminary agenda but left off the final agenda was a discussion about the El Toro Reuse Planning Authority and its proposal for the “noxious use” initiative. If approved in 2000, the measure would require county voters to approve noxious uses--such as an international airport at the Marine Corps air station--by a two-thirds majority. Passage of that initiative would allow the anti-airport entities to lobby for another airport initiative, which would then need that two-thirds majority. The item may return to the council, Mayor Christina L. Shea said, when more information on the initiative is provided.
The $200,000 was granted following an El Toro Reuse Planning Authority request. The additional $75,000 would be used to promote the Millennium Plan, the non-airport alternative the authority supports.
