GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP
In the final of the Cerritos Gahr tournament:
Torrance Bishop Montgomery 58, No. 8 Irvine 54--Irvine stayed close the entire game, but Bishop Montgomery made its free throws down the stretch and handed the Vaqueros their first loss of the season. Kristin Thawley and Jody Carlson scored 15 points each for Irvine (14-1).
In the final of the Laguna Beach tournament:
Santa Ana Valley 60, Orange Lutheran 54--Carina Martinez scored 18 points and Crystal Davis had 16 for Santa Ana Valley (9-2). Freshman Ashley Amaral had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Orange Lutheran (7-5). Nicole Grady added 16 points for the Lancers.
In the final of the Garden Grove tournament:
Anaheim 50, Paramount 23--The Colonists (8-5) more than doubled Paramount’s score in winning the tournament championship. Point guard Alicia Gallardo was the high scorer with 12 points and was named tournament MVP. Shooting guard Brenda Gallardo had 10 points, and forward Yuri Alvarado had 11 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots.
In the final of the Orangewood Academy tournament:
Whittier Christian 47, Connelly 32--Allison Holland had 15 points, 12 rebounds and six steals to lead the Heralds (9-5). Nicole Stephan had 10 points, 14 rebounds and five steals for Whittier Christian.
In the third-place game at the Marina tournament:
Santa Margarita 66, Oakland Castro Valley 45--After a sluggish start, the Eagles (10-4) were too much for Castro Valley (5-5). Santa Margarita blew the game open by outscoring Castro Valley, 17-7, in the third quarter. Venessa Ferragamo led the Eagles with 19 points.
In the final of the Savanna tournament:
Valencia 44, Torrance 38--Valencia (13-1) trailed by two before outscoring Torrance, 14-6, in the final period. Michelle Pietka led the Tigers with 20 points and freshman Goldie Fadakar chipped in with 12 points for the Tigers.
In the third-place game:
Savanna 47, Compton 20--Senior guard Reanita Starr was high scorer with 16 points in leading the Lady Rebels to third place in their own tournament. She also was selected for all-tournament honors. Sophomore forward Monica Thomas added nine points and 11 rebounds.
