Buena Tripped Up in Final of Northwest Tournament

Courtney Young scored 20 points but Buena High lost to Roosevelt of South Dakota, 55-52, on Thursday night in the championship game of the Northwest tournament in Beaverton, Ore.

Drake-bound Mandy Kappel scored 16 points, including four three throws in the final minute for Roosevelt (26-0).

Roosevelt, the South Dakota state champion, has won 65 consecutive games.

Kelly Greathouse had 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Bulldogs (10-4), ranked No. 2 in the region by The Times.

Harvard-Westlake 64, Muir 51--Brooke Porter had 21 points and seven assists, and L’Tanya Robnett added 15 points for the Wolverines (9-3), who outscored the Mustangs (10-2) by 10 points in the fourth quarter to win in the quarterfinals of the Ayala tournament State Elite Division.

Newbury Park 60, Fontana 52--Bridget Harris made four three-pointers and had 14 points for the Panthers in the semifinals of the Ayala tournament Open Division.

Cassandra Harris scored 12 points for Newbury Park, ranked No. 5 in the region by The Times, which built a 40-23 halftime lead.

Newbury Park (9-4) has won its last four games, including three consecutive games played at 8 a.m.

Newbury Park plays Alhambra today at 2 in the final.

North Hollywood 67, Valencia 60--Kaipresha Price scored 22 points and the Huskies (9-4) won the championship game of the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Valencia (7-6) took a 57-56 late in the fourth quarter but Price made six straight free throws and Toni Lashley made a three-pointer to help North Hollywood pull away.

Richelle Sherman scored 17 points and 12 rebounds for North Hollywood, which has won six in a row.

Monroe 56, Dorsey 47--Rasheeda Gray scored 18 points and Shakaria Jones had 13 to help the Vikings win the Canoga Park tournament.

Jones and Gray each scored six points in the first quarter, when Monroe (10-5) bolted to a 19-9 lead and Dorsey never recovered.

Gray had 12 rebounds and Jones added five assists.

Danisha Jasper had 10 points for the Vikings.

Burroughs 59, Moorpark 58--Gracie Coronado sank a shot from the lane with six seconds remaining to give the Indians (12-3) fifth place at the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Coronado scored 22 points.

Kelly Geis scored 17 points and Kristin Nadas had 11 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocked shots for the Musketeers (8-4).

St. Mary’s Academy 51, Santa Paula 44--Sarah Kolbeck scored 22 points for the Cardinals (8-5), who couldn’t hold on to a one-point halftime lead in the ninth-place game at the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Montclair Prep 64, Holy Family 36--Jasmine Wesley had 21 points and 23 rebounds for the Mounties in a nonleague victory at Montclair Prep.

Eshaya Murphy had 16 points, 17 rebounds, 10 assists, and six steals for Montclair Prep (10-2).
