Overtime Win Nothing New for Pirates
Orange Coast, playing in overtime for the fourth time this season, beat host Southwestern, 81-72, in a nonconference men’s basketball game Saturday.
Center Dave Elliott had seven of his 18 points in overtime for Orange Coast (8-3), which is 4-0 in overtime games this season.
David Castleton added 17 for OCC, which scored the first eight points of overtime after the teams were tied, 64-64, at the end of regulation.
Orange Coast hit five of 21 three-point attempts and Southwestern made seven of 18.
Dedrick Watts had a game-high 19 points for Southwestern (5-9).
In the Pasadena men’s tournament:
Santa Monica 84, Santa Ana 70--Santa Ana, which was slowed because several players had the flu, was no match for Santa Monica, which won its fourth consecutive Pasadena tournament championship.
Sophomore Greg Gray, who had 37 points in Friday’s double-overtime victory over Pasadena, was slowed by a sore foot against Santa Monica. He had eight points before fouling out.
Zac Fray made eight of 11 shots and had a team-high 18 points for Santa Ana (11-2).
Sal Raphael and Tyus Tillman had 12 rebounds each for Santa Monica, which outrebounded Santa Ana, 61-29.
Santa Monica is 10-5.
Fullerton 76, Santa Barbara 74--Levar Grace scored on a layup off an inbound pass from Charles Mann with four seconds left for Fullerton (9-7) in the consolation final.
Chris Smith made eight of 12 shots, including five of seven three-point tries, to finish with a team-high 30 points for Fullerton.
In the Orange Coast women’s tournament:
Orange Coast 84, Southwestern 51--Karyn Fierst scored 17 points and Erin Tomlinson added 16 for Orange Coast (13-1).
Fierst made three of four three-point attempts and OCC was seven of 14 as a team.
The Pirates advanced to the championship game at 4 p.m. today against Cerritos, which beat San Diego Mesa, 58-49, in the other semifinal.
Southwestern and San Diego Mesa meet at 2 p.m. in the third-place game.
Fullerton 58, Cuesta 44--Teresa Manning scored 17 points and Missy Bynon added 11 for Fullerton (8-6), which plays Chaffey in the consolation final at noon.
Carrie Bannister and Katy Barstow each had seven rebounds for the Hornets.
In a nonconference game:
Grossmont 55, Cypress 48--Sharee Brown scored 20 points in a losing effort for host Cypress (4-7). Cypress made only 27% of its shots.
