Ventura County Roundup : PORT HUENEME : Visiting Destroyer Open for Tours
The U.S. destroyer Russell, whose home port is Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, will be docked at the Port Hueneme naval base and open for public tours Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m.
The vessel is visiting the Naval Surface Warfare Center for a combat systems check, officials said. During the inspection, a local team of engineers and logisticians evaluate the destroyer’s ability to wage battle. The team will also provide safety training.
The Russell is assigned to a carrier battle group whose job is to destroy enemy aircraft, missiles, submarines, surface ships and land targets.
To see the destroyer, enter the naval base through the Pleasant Valley gate and follow the signs to Wharf 3. For more information, call 228-6150.
