No-Driving Range: I’m staying downtown in an apartment building that’s convenient for getting to the theater. But the big problem for me here is that I don’t drive. When I get back to London I think I’m going to learn.
After Work: We tend to go down to Otto’s, the restaurant at the Music Center just below the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, for a drink. If we’re feeling enthusiastic we’ll go to someplace like Bar Marmont where you can get food at night. There aren’t many places where you can book a table and eat after a show. Nobody wants to eat that late.
Off-Hours: We work on Saturdays and Sunday matinees, so our weekends are 4:30 Sunday through Tuesday, and we like to go away somewhere for a mini trip. Last weekend I went to Catalina, where we stayed in the Zane Grey Hotel. That was a fun little beach holiday. We also went on one of those nighttime underwater cruises. That was great--to see the fish and the sharks.
Strolling: I loved Union Station. I went there and down Olvera Street, which is really sweet. It’s strange here, because it’s all pockets of other worlds. You can lose yourself very quickly in another whole culture. Everywhere feels a little bit different. I went to Old Town Pasadena the other day, and I thought it was lovely. I went to downtown Burbank, where I was driven around by [screenwriter] Caroline Thompson and she showed me Bette Davis’ old house near Warner Bros. People keep horses over there, which I found surprising.
Old Hollywood: I took my parents to the Bel-Air Hotel for lunch. It’s very beautiful and I thought they’d enjoy it because there are swans in the garden and it’s such an old Hollywood type of place. I love anything with a bit of history to it, anything old Hollywood, so I do a lot of that sort of stuff. I went to the Hollywood Memorial Cemetery and looked up famous people. And I had lunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where I feel like I’m in an old movie.
