Second-Seeded Team Advances in Badminton

Second-seeded Kevin Han and Alex Liang defeated Costa Mesa’s Hoang Ly and Alta Loma’s Amarit Rojsirivit in the men’s doubles semifinals of the U.S. National Badminton Championships Saturday at the Orange County Badminton Club.

Ly and Rojsirivit lost to Colorado’s Han and Liang, 15-5, 15-12. Han and Liang will face top-seeded Howard Bach and Mark Manha of Colorado in the final at noon today.

In women’s singles, Elie Wu of Alhambra Keppel High School lost to second-seeded Cindy Shi of Colorado, 11-5, 11-3. Shi will play Maryland’s top-seeded Yeping Tang, an 11-0, 11-4 winner over Colorado’s Kathy Zimmerman.

Corona del Mar’s Hunter Jack rallied from a one-set deficit Saturday to defeat Christopher Brown of Derwood, Md., in the opening round of the Easter Bowl tennis tournament at Grenelefe Golf and Tennis Resort in Haines City, Fla.

Jack, a sophomore playing in his first match since tearing a tendon in his leg last November, won, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the boys’ 16 division. He will play 17th-seeded Jason Mallalah, of Longwood, Fla., in the second round.
