Camarillo Still Smelling Like a Rose, 20-10

After a slow start, the Camarillo High football team is in high gear.

The Scorpions, who opened with consecutive losses, got two rushing touchdowns from Brent Rose and won their sixth game in a row, downing Rio Mesa, 20-10, Friday night in a Pacific View League game at Rio Mesa.

Camarillo (6-2, 2-0 in league play) built a 14-0 lead, scoring on its first two possessions. Rose capped a seven-play, 70-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run.

Greg Rountree added a one-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter.

For Rountree, the Scorpions’ leading rusher, it was his first rushing touchdown of the season. He finished with 77 yards in 19 carries.

Rio Mesa (2-6, 1-2) scored with 2:51 to play in the first half when quarterback Pancho Tinoco connected with Steven Qualls on a 41-yard pass play.

Tinoco completed 11 of 22 passes for 151 yards.

Rio Mesa’s Tom Saxey kicked a 32-yard field goal with nine seconds left in the first half to cut Camarillo’s lead to 14-10.

Rose scored on a one-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Garrett Valencia of Camarillo completed 14 of 23 passes for 206 yards. He completed six of seven passes on the first two drives.
