Nine city Housing Authority facilities will share a $2.1-million federal grant to fight illegal drugs.

Awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the grant will help bring law enforcement and social services programs to each housing project.

Services offered through the city drug elimination program include community-based policing by Housing Authority resource officers, referral to drug rehabilitation programs, organization of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, job training, gang intervention programs, youth activities and HIV and teenage pregnancy prevention programs.

Housing Authority Executive Director Don Smith called the drug elimination program “an alternative to drugs and violence.”

“Thanks to this grant from HUD, we can continue the programs that open doors for our residents,” Smith said.
