University Girls’ Golf Team Wins Southern Section Title
University High of Irvine won the first-ever Southern Section championship in girls’ golf Monday by shooting a team score of 256 at Sandpiper Golf Course in Goleta.
Freshman Angela Won led the Trojans by shooting five-over-par 79. Sunny Lee and Michelle Barth, both sophomores, shot 88 and 89, respectively, to round out the University scoring.
“We hope this is the first of many,” Coach Patti Anduri said. “Nobody knew what to expect at the beginning. I knew we had three strong players, but I didn’t know what everyone else had.”
Fullerton Rosary shot 264 to finish second and Harvard-Westlake was third with 266.
This is the first year that the Southern Section has sanctioned girls’ golf. Previously, girls had to try out for coed teams. Few were able to compete against boys while playing from championship tees.
Winning the first girls-only tournament meant a great deal to the University players.
“We wanted it real bad,” Lee said.
