Elizabeth Taylor was honorary chair and Jamie Lee Curtis was emcee Oct. 24 at the fifth annual Dream Halloween fund-raiser to benefit children affected by AIDS. More than $1.2 million was raised, $25,000 from auctioning off a one-of-a-kind Elizabeth Taylor doll to Demi Moore, who phoned in her bid from Paris. The doll wears a copy of a gown Taylor wore to the 1954 Academy Awards show and real diamond jewelry. It was created by art director Anne Zielinski-Old and sculptor Frederick Jackson. The Barker Hangar at Santa Monica Airport was transformed into a Halloween wonderland, and hundreds of children participated in games, arts and crafts and a fun house. Costumed characters also entertained the children. About 2,500 guests, including celebrities, attended the event, chaired by Jill E. Barad, chairman and chief executive of Mattel Inc., and Michael Goldstein, chief executive of Toys “R” Us. They received the Ribbon of Dreams Award, recognizing their commitment and dedication to improving the lives of children with AIDS. The proceeds will be distributed by the Children Affected by AIDS Foundation to nonprofit organizations providing direct service and care to children with HIV / AIDS.

* More than 1,000 people of all ages and fitness levels joined celebrities Cindy Crawford, Tea Leoni, “Sunset Beach” cast members Lesley-Anne Down, Shawn Batten and Priscilla Garita, KABC-AM (790) radio’s Stephanie Miller and designer Nathalie Marciano at the third annual Expedition Inspiration Take-a-Hike for Breast Cancer Research Oct. 17. Celebrities led beginning, intermediate and advanced hikes at the Paramount Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains, and the UCLA Iris Cantor Mobil Mammography unit conducted free mammograms and set up booths with information about breast cancer prevention. The more than $92,000 raised will benefit the Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research and the Revlon / UCLA and USC / Norris breast centers.

* Glendale Adventist Medical Center Foundation collected $150,000 during the hospital’s “Live Your Life to the Fullest” campaign held Oct. 12-19. More than 1,000 donors, volunteers, employees and community members participated in events including two fund-raisers that paid for equipment needed for the hospital’s new Maternity & Outpatient Surgery Center. The week was kicked off with a Nordstrom Glendale Galleria and Glendale Adventist Medical Center Guild “My Fair Lady Symposium & Fashion Show” at the Red Lion Hotel in Glendale. The final event was the 15th annual Fairways Golf Classic at the Oakmount Country Club in Glendale. More than 195 golfers participated, including local high school students.

* Cardinal Roger Mahony, a founder and supporter of the Serra Project, was among the 500 who attended the charity’s annual black-tie fund-raising dinner and silent auction, A Faire of the Heart IX. The $205,000 raised at the Oct. 19 event will benefit the Serra Project, the largest nonprofit provider of AIDS housing in Southern California. Mahony presented the Compassion Award to veteran travel industry executive Brian D. Stevens, who has served on the group’s board of directors since 1995. The Hope Award went to 14-year-old AIDS activist Hydeia L. Broadbent who was born with HIV and has been living with AIDS since she was 5. American Airlines received the Community Award and the law offices of Bronson, Bronson & McKinnon received the Care Giving Award. The event was chaired by Dick Van Patten and his wife, Pat. Georgiana and Ricardo Montalban were honorary chairs. Members of the honorary dinner committee included Joe Mantegna, Angela Lansbury, Stefanie Powers, Cloris Leachman, Florence Henderson, Bob and Jenny Chartoff and Christine Lahti and her husband, Thomas Schlamme.

* More than 500 people gathered and raised $1.5 million for the Institute for Childhood and Neglected Diseases at the Scripps Research Institute at a Christie’s Los Angeles auction of exceptional cars Oct. 17. The majority of the 15 cars were donated by John Moores, owner of the San Diego Padres. Among the automobiles were a 1967 Ferrari 275 NART Spyder and a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. The Institute for Childhood and Neglected Diseases is a new group that will bring together top scientists from around the world to research incurable diseases.

* Michelle Pfeiffer and David E. Kelley, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Randy Newman, Christine Lahti, David Spade, Steven Seagal, Ted Danson, Jane Seymour and James Keach, Rob Reiner and Paul Reiser were among the 1,500 guests who attended the Environmental Media Assn. Awards & Festival on Oct. 11 at Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades. About $650,000 was raised for the Environmental Media Assn., which was created in 1989 to mobilize the entertainment industry to educate people about environmental problems and inspire them to act on those problems. The event was sponsored by Italian clothing maker Ermenegildo Zegna.
