Jones Works Just Hard Enough to Keep Titles on TKO in 10th

Roy Jones Jr. knocked down Otis Grant of Canada twice and retained the World Boxing Assn. and World Boxing Council light-heavyweight titles when Grant’s trainer, Russ Anber, jumped into the ring after Grant was knocked down in the 10th round at Mashantucket, Conn.

Jones also knocked down Grant in the sixth round, but then in the seventh he did so little that the crowd of about 3,500 booed him and referee Arthur Mercante stepped in at one point and told Jones to fight.

“I’m the man, I’m the best, I do whatever I have to do to win,” Jones said.

Jones, 29, boosted his record to 38-1 with 31 knockouts. Grant is 31-2-1 with 17 knockouts.

Tennis

Unseeded Steffi Graf of Germany defeated sixth-seeded Nathalie Tauziat of France, 6-4, 6-1, to advance to the finals in the Advanta Championships at Villanova, Pa.

Graf, making her latest comeback from injuries, will face top-ranked Lindsay Davenport, who defeated fifth-seeded Monica Seles, 6-3, 6-3, to reach the finals for the second consecutive year.

Defending champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia and Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia won semifinal matches and will play for the Kremlin Cup title today at Moscow.

Kafelnikov, seeded second, walked into the title match when his opponent, sixth-seeded Marc Rosset of Switzerland, withdrew in the second set because of a hip injury. Kafelnikov led, 6-1, 2-0. Ivanisevic, seeded third, ousted surprise contender Arnaud Clement of France, 7-5, 6-2.

Unseeded Todd Martin and Thomas Johansson defeated the top two British players on the ATP Tour to advance to the final of the Stockholm Open.

Martin rallied to defeat third-seeded Tim Henman, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, and made it to the title match of the indoor event for the second time in three years. Johansson, of Sweden, overcame Greg Rusedski, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7).

Golf

Hale Irwin and Gil Morgan moved a step closer to a season-ending confrontation in the inaugural Senior Match Play Challenge at Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert.

Irwin will face David Graham in one semifinal, and Morgan, second to Irwin in earnings and wins this year, will face Bob Charles in the other.

Irwin beat Bruce Summerhays, 2 and 1, and Morgan advanced with a 3-and-2 win over Dana Quigley.

Andrea Lloyd, who helped the Columbus Quest win two American Basketball League titles, will come out of retirement to play for at least three months. Lloyd will rejoin the Quest until either Beverly Williams or Valerie Still returns from knee injuries. . . . World champion Alexei Yagudin defeated teammate Alexander Abt to win the men’s event in the Nations Cup figure skating competition at Gelsenkirchen, Germany, where Russians are on the verge of a sweep. In the ice dance, two more world champions, Angelika Krylova and Oleg Ovsiannikov, used a controversial routine entirely to drums and percussion instruments to win. Maria Petrova and Alexei Tikhonov won the pairs event over a weak field. . . . Ids Postma of the Netherlands set a track record when he won the men’s 1,500-meter speedskating World Cup opener with a time of 1 minute 48.82 seconds at Hamar, Norway. . . . Igor Razoryonov of Ukraine hoisted 511 1/2 pounds on his final clean-and-jerk and won the 231-pound title at the world weightlifting championships at Lahti, Finland.

Miscellany

Wide receiver Charles Jordan of the Miami Dolphins was arrested after repeatedly refusing to leave a bar in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., then fought with officers as they tried to take him into custody, police said.

Jordan, who is on injured reserve, was charged with trespassing after a warning, battery on a law enforcement officer, and resisting arrest. He was released on $1,625 bond.

The United States defeated Canada, 6-15, 15-9, 16-14, 15-13, to move into the second round of the men’s world volleyball championships at Tokyo.

The USC women’s soccer team will play at No. 10 San Diego State (18-2-1) today at 1 in the second round of the NCAA tournament. . . . The top-ranked USC men’s water polo team (19-1, 6-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) faces No. 2 UCLA (15-3, 6-1) today at noon at McDonald’s Swim Stadium.

Felipe’s goal in the 69th minute gave the Brazilian club Vasco da Gama a 1-0 victory over D.C. United in the first leg of the Interamerican Cup at Washington.
