New Star Hull Helps Beat Red Wings, 3-2

Brett Hull scored two goals, including the tie-breaker with 6 minutes left, to lift the Stars to a 3-2 victory over the Red Wings on Saturday at Dallas.

With the score tied, 2-2, Hull took a pass from Mike Modano and fired a slap shot from the middle of the left circle that beat Red Wing goaltender Chris Osgood and kept the Stars unbeaten at home.

Hull, signed to a three-year, $17.5-million free-agent contract in July, scored his second and third goals. “It’s only the ninth game,” he said. “They’re still the champs. We’re going to have to do a lot more.”

Jere Lehtinen added a goal and an assist, and Modano had two assists for the Stars.

Edmonton 4, Pittsburgh 1--Kevin Brown scored on the power play and Boyd Devereaux added a short-handed goal one minute later in the first period as the Oilers shut down the visiting Penguins.

The Penguins lost star Jaromir Jagr in the second period because of a bruised chest. He was cross-checked in the first period by Mats Lindgren and collided in the second with Edmonton defenseman Roman Hamrlik.

Ottawa 5, Montreal 1--Shawn McEachern scored twice and Alexei Yashin had his first goal of the season in the Senators’ win at Kanata, Canada.

Andreas Johansson and Radek Bonk also scored for the Senators. Ron Tugnutt made 27 saves, giving up only Mark Recchi’s third-period goal.

Buffalo 6, Toronto 3--Geoff Sanderson scored three goals to lead the visiting Sabres, completing a sweep of their home-and-home series.

Toronto had battled back from a 3-0 deficit with three second-period goals, but Michael Peca scored late in the period on a deflection to put Buffalo ahead to stay.

Nashville 3, Colorado 2--Andrew Brunette beat Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy with a backhand shot at 8:51 of the third period as the Predators won consecutive games for the first time.

Sebastien Bordeleau and Greg Johnson also scored for the Predators at Nashville.

Carolina 2, Boston 0--Arturs Irbe made 34 saves for his second shutout for the visiting Hurricanes. Irbe, signed as a free agent during the off-season, lowered his league-best goals-against average to 0.76 with his 15th career shutout.

N.Y. York Islanders 3, Philadelphia 2--Tommy Salo made 28 saves and Bryan Smolinski had a goal and an assist for the Islanders at Uniondale, N.Y.

New Jersey 3, Florida 1--Dave Andreychuk scored two power-play goals as the Devils beat the visiting Panthers. Denis Pederson also scored for New Jersey, 4-1-0 in its last five games.

San Jose 6, Tampa Bay 1--Ron Sutter scored twice to lead the Sharks at San Jose, and Jeff Friesen added three assists. It was the Sharks’ first victory after opening 0-6-2.

NHL Notes

Oiler center Doug Weight will be out for about three months because of an injured right knee. Weight suffered the injury in the first period of Wednesday’s game against Washington.
