Moorpark Stonewalls West L.A.

Reginald Haynes of West Los Angeles College was ruled down at the one-yard line as time expired and Moorpark escaped with a 19-18 victory Saturday at West L.A. in a game between two teams previously unbeaten in Western State Conference Southern Division play.

With no timeouts remaining, the Oilers drove 73 yards to the Moorpark one on nine plays in the final 2:11, but Haynes was stopped on two consecutive quarterback sneaks.

One official ruled his second try a touchdown but was overruled after a brief conference.

“In 24 years of coaching, I have never seen two teams run on the field at the end of the game, [both] thinking they had won,” said Lee Rolston, offensive coordinator for West L.A.

Bryan Spencer completed eight of 10 passes for 174 yards, including touchdown plays of 25 yards to Shayne Sobel and 55 yards to Dave Burns in the fourth quarter to give the Raiders a 19-12 lead.

Two turnovers by Moorpark (6-1, 4-0 in conference play) helped West L.A. (4-3, 3-1) to a 12-0 halftime lead on touchdown runs of 10 and five yards by Roderick Williams.

Emory Holmes cut the lead in half with a four-yard scoring run on a drive that started at the Oilers’ 21-yard line after a punt that traveled minus-10 yards.
