Primary Campaign
Re “Alarcon May Feel Fallout of Primary,” Oct. 26.
Once again, looking the other way and taking no responsibility whatsoever for his actions, Richard Alarcon glibly dismisses the damage done by his racially charged primary campaign.
Alarcon may be correct that the Democratic Party regulars in Sacramento have embraced him and his victory, but I hope he is dead wrong to think that we Democrats in the Valley will abide by his racial pandering and exploitation of ethnic fears. His “us-against-them,” “it’s our turn,” appeal to Latino voters, practically a crusade rather than a campaign, has further fueled the fires of ethnic tension and should not be tolerated.
I know that the district is 3-1 Democratic and that there is little chance that Alarcon will be beaten. Nonetheless, he won’t have my vote. When I go to the polls on Tuesday, the vote I cast against Alarcon will be a measure of protest of him and his racist tactics. I encourage every voter in the district, especially Democrats, to do the same.
