Ted Valentine was one of the three referees, lasting longer in the tournament than Indiana Coach Bob Knight. Miles Simon made the first shot and Arizona was off and running, making seven of its first 13 shots for a 19-9 lead. Maryland made three of its first 15 shots. The Terrapins shot 34.2% for the half. The half belonged to Mike Bibby, who scored 10 consecutive points, pushing Arizona’s from 19-13 to 29-18 with 6:18 left. He made back-to-back three pointers in that run. Moments later, he lobbed to Bennett Davison for a dunk on a fastbreak for a 33-21 lead. The pace picked up, with Arizona getting the better of it. Laron Profit blocked Simon shot. On the other end, Profit’s shot was slapped by the Wildcats’ Eugene Edgerson into the Arizona pep band. Stokes made a Bibby-like move, with a scoop-lob pass to Terence Morris for a dunk on a fastbreak. Profit’s rebound and basket made it, 40-33, but Michael Dickerson sank a running baseline jumper with two seconds left.

The half follows a pattern, Arizona builds a double-digit lead and Maryland whittles it down. A Davison layup gave Arizona a 52-38 lead with 16:32 left. Maryland scored the next eight points. But Bibby scored on a layup and was fouled, making the free throw for a 56-46 lead. Elliott and Strokes led a 10-1 run, scoring five points each, to pull Maryland to within one at 57-56 with 10:21 left. The aggressive play, though, took its toll. Three Terrapins--Elliott, Obinna Ekezie and Mike Mardesich--had four fouls with 12 minutes left. All fouled out. Elliott, the team’s second-leading scorer, was gone with eight minutes left. Up 57-56, Simon got hot. He scored 10 points in a 22-11 run that put the game away. Simon made two three point goals, sandwiched around a Bibby three-pointer, for a 79-67 lead. Arizona made eight of 12 free throws in the last two minutes.
