Auction of Art From Museum
About 400 pieces of ethnographic art and crafts from the collection of the Craft and Folk Art Museum will go on the auction block Thursday, 7:30 p.m., at Butterfield & Butterfield in Los Angeles. The collection--valued at a total of $300,000 to $500,000--is being sold to pay off debts of the museum, which closed last December after 30 years of operation on Wilshire Boulevard.
Among the items to be offered are a Mexican mariachi band, composed of life-size papier-ma^che skeleton figures, by the Linares Family ($12,000 to $18,000); “Good Morning America,” a comical ceramic sculpture of a bordello by the late Beatrice Wood ($10,000 to $15,000); an ebony-inlaid maple rocking chair by Sam Maloof ($10,000 to $15,000); and an African animal mask from the Bobo tribe ($8,000 to $12,000). The collection includes Amish quilts, Native American pottery, Tibetan paintings, Japanese ceramics, dolls, toys and textiles. Estimated selling prices begin at $75.
