Mangkalakiri, Wu Team to Win Badminton Event

May Mangkalakiri of Orange and teammate Elie Wu of Arcadia won the under-19 girls’ doubles title Sunday at the U.S. Junior National Badminton Championships at the Orange County Badminton Club.

Mangkalakiri and Wu defeated Amy Nguy (Silver Spring, Md.) and Casey Peters (Manhattan Beach), 15-9, 15-4.

In the boys’ 14-under boys’ singles, Mike Chansawangpuvana of Orange was defeated by top-seeded Eric Go (Palo Alto), 15-1, 15-11. Go teamed with Adam Scholl (Manhattan Beach) to beat Chansawangpuvana and Nick Mangkalakiri of Orange to win the under-14 boys’ doubles title, 15-3, 17-4. In the third-place match, Matt Sakulrattanakom and Jeffrey Soonlan (both of Orange), defeated Chris Mitromaras and Cliff Pirato, both of Miller Place, N.Y., 17-15, 7-15, 18-16.

Chansawangpuvana and Panita Phongasavithas (Anaheim Hills) took third in the under-14 mixed doubles, beating Pirato and Danielle Korshak, both of Miller Place, N.Y., 15-2, 15-1.

May Mangkalakiri and Jessica Allen (Cupertino) took third in under-16 girls’ doubles, beating Alana Ackerman (Madison, Wis.) and Keri La Salla (Sound Beach, N.Y.), 15-11, 9-15, 15-9.

In girls’ 14-under doubles, Phongasavithas teamed with Connie Hwang (Rowland Heights) to place third, beating Lee Ann Alwine (Wooster, Ohio) and Korshak, 18-14, 15-4.

In boys’ under-12 doubles, Brendan Taft (Orange) and Danny Gibbs (Redondo Beach) defeated Charlie Hsu (Manhattan Beach) and Nikhil Ashra (Greenwich, Conn.), 15-10, 15-12, to place third.

Wook Kim and Tam Nguyen, both of Garden Grove, lost in the third-place under-21 boys’ doubles match to T Do and Nhon Nguyen, both of Milpitas, 15-11, 15-12.
