Times Honors High School Journalists

Thirteen high school journalists and two high school programs were selected Wednesday as winners and honorable mentions in The Times Ventura County and Valley editions’ first high school journalism awards program.

The winners, whose works were selected from hundreds of entries, are:

* Nick Edwards, Adolfo Camarillo High School, feature story.

* Luis Chavarin, Channel Islands High School, feature photo.

* Eric Cheung, Thousand Oaks High School, cartoon/illustration.

* Asa Marie Hastings Standfeldt IV, Ventura High School, arts and entertainment.

* Noah Strote, Harvard Westlake High School, news story.

* Andrew Solomon and Noah Strote, Harvard Westlake, staff editorial.

* Eric Ferkel, Harvard Westlake, sports story.

Winners of honorable mention awards included:

* Nathan Baca, Ventura High, news story.

* Zach Cohen, Harvard Westlake, feature story.

* Isaac Carrillo, Channel Islands High School, staff editorial.

* Shane Cohn, Ventura High School, sports story.

* Steve Carlson, Ventura High School, arts and entertainment.

High school journalism department winners were San Fernando High School in a category for papers up to four pages, and The Buckley School for high school papers of five or more pages.

The awards were presented Wednesday at the Times Valley Edition offices in Chatsworth during a ceremony hosted by Valley Edition editor Ardith Hilliard and Ventura County Edition editor William Overend.

The awards, originally established by The Times’ Orange County edition, honor exemplary journalism in Ventura County, San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita and Antelope Valley high schools.

The program seeks to encourage and recognize outstanding journalism among high school students.

The winners were chosen by members of The Times editorial staff.

Each winner was awarded $250, and the two journalism departments each received $1,000.
