Giannini, Greaves Will Coach East Squad; Hayashida Will Lead the West

George Giannini and John Greaves of Montclair Prep have been chosen co-coaches of the East team and Rick Hayashida of El Camino Real will head the West team in the second Valley Youth Conference all-star football game.

The game, featuring recent high school graduates, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on July 17 at Birmingham High.

Practice starts Monday at Monroe for the East and at Birmingham for the West.

MOTOR SPORTS

M.K. Kanke of Granada Hills leads the Featherlite Southwest Tour Series standings with 1,212 points as a result of two victories and six top-five finishes in eight starts this season.

Bob Lyon of Agua Dulce is sixth with 981 points. Keith Spangler of Chatsworth is 11th with 919 points and Darrell LaMoure of Glendale (916) is 12th.

SOFTBALL

Orlando shortstop Crystl Bustos of Canyon Country was selected Women’s Professional Fastpitch player of the week.

Bustos, a former Canyon High star, hit .389 with three home runs, a double, six runs scored and eight runs batted in in five games.

Pitchers Kat Walsh (3-2) and Laura Demetrion (1-0) led the 12-and-under Northridge ASA girls’ team to fourth place in an ASA Western District tournament last weekend in Camarillo, giving the team its first berth in the state tournament.

Simi Valley won the tournament, followed by Sylmar and Hart. The top four teams qualified for the state tournament July 10-12 in Escondido.

GOLF

Brian Woolf of Granada Hills is seven-over-par 149, 10 strokes behind the leaders, after two rounds of the American junior Golf Assn.’ Polo Junior tournament at Langon Farms in Aurora, Ore.

Jason Allred of Ashland, Ore., a co-leader at 139, has committed to Pepperdine.

The Wood Ranch team of Don Fiala, Dave Saylor, Mitch Voges and Nathan Miles won a chip-off over Alhambra and Friendly Hills to win the SCPGA Pro-Team Championship at Friendly Hills Country Club in Whittier.
