Academic Decathlon Team to Vie for Title
Members of the Laguna Hills High School academic decathlon team will compete for the eighth time in the statewide “battle of the brains” next month, after winning over 60 Orange County teams last week.
The nine-member team will compete for the school’s third state title.
Laguna Hills team members are Cindy Chang, Nelson Lai, David Lutz, Jeff Malinen, Laura Van Nostrand, Matt Stebbins, David Troxell, Margaret Vo and Elizabeth Weinberg. Team coaches are teachers Roger Gunderson and Kathy Lane.
Trabuco Hills High School’s team came in second countywide, and could still be selected to compete in the state finals March 20-21 at Cal Poly Pomona. Trabuco placed second in the state competition last year.
The Trabuco team members are: David Guess, Khanh Hgo, Suzanne Linn, Patrick McBride, Beth Montez, Quarry Nguyen, Juhwan Suh, Janet Tran and Jeremy Wiederspahn. The team is coached by teacher Janet Hooper.
Academic decathlon competition events include written exams in economics, fine arts, mathematics, science and social science.
