Authorities on Wednesday were investigating the cause of a fire that injured a 67-year-old Newport Beach man and damaged several apartment units in the Balboa Bay Club late Tuesday night.

Warren TenEyck was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, where he was treated for smoke inhalation and cuts to his feet he received when he walked barefoot on glass shattered during the fire, said Battalion Chief Don Jones.

Jones said the fire in the 1200 block of West Coast Highway originated in TenEyck’s kitchen minutes before 11 p.m. Tuesday, trapping him on the third-floor balcony.

A neighbor attempted to douse the flames with a fire extinguisher and a garden hose before firefighters arrived, Jones said. Newport Beach and Costa Mesa firefighters rescued TenEyck and extinguished the fire at 11:09 p.m. Officials estimated the damage at $80,000. Five adjacent apartment units received extensive smoke and water damage.
