TRACK AND FIELD
Orange County Championships, Trabuco Hills HS, 8 a.m. Saturday: Although this is a team-scoring event, the highlights should come from individual match-ups. In the girls’ 300 hurdles, Santa Margarita senior Amanda Shanklin and Mission Viejo freshman Dana Bethel will finally run in the same race. They ran in separate heats at Trabuco Hills Invitational, with Shanklin posting the county’s fastest time (44.24) and Bethel the second (45.7). The 100 hurdles should also be interesting because Bethel (14.47) will oppose sister Ashley (14.46). In the boys’ 110 hurdles, Dana Hills’ James Brown and Irvine’s Al Williams will race together for the first time this season. Each has run 14.5, best times in the county thus far.
* Arcadia Invitational, Arcadia HS, 4 p.m. Saturday: Rains postponed the event, originally scheduled April 11. Some of the county’s elite athletes, including Trabuco Hills’ Darnesha Griffith (triple jump), will compete here after participating in the Orange County Championships earlier in the day thanks to a one-time Southern Section ruling that will allow athletes to compete in two meets on the same day. University’s Allyson Marquand is among three girls rated in the nation’s top 10 who will race in the 3,200 meters. The 31st annual invitational is one of the nation’s best, drawing its field from throughout Southern California. Last year’s meet provided 18 nation-leading prep marks.
