The 54 runs scored by Montclair Prep’s baseball team Tuesday against Pilgrim was a Southern Section and state record.

The old Southern Section record of 45 runs was established by Whittier against Garden Grove in 1922. The state record was held by San Diego Parker, which scored 53 runs against Escondido Calvin Christian in 1985.

The Mounties’ 54-1 victory was accomplished in four innings.

BOXING

Needing a Hall pass: Junior-middleweight Fernando Vargas of Oxnard will put his 11-0 professional record on the line against veteran Eddie Hall of Pittsburgh in a 10-round bout May 9 at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

Vargas, 20, a welterweight on the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, has knocked out all his opponents since turning pro in March 1997. Hall is 27-12 with 13 knockouts.

BASKETBALL

Hull commits: Mark Hull, a 6-foot-6 1/2 forward for the Hoover High boys’ team, has signed a letter of intent to attend UC Santa Barbara.

Hull averaged 27.9 points and 13.9 rebounds a game.

VOLLEYBALL

Bell rung: Oliver Bell, an outside hitter for the Simi Valley High boys’ team, has committed to Cal State Northridge. Bell, a 6-foot-4 foreign exchange student from Germany, leads the Pioneers in kills and digs.

FOOTBALL

Hired: Norm Andersen, a former wide receiver and eight-year assistant coach for UCLA, has been hired as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Ventura College. Anderson, a teacher at Fillmore High, was an assistant at Iowa State for five years and Arizona for two years.

Signed: Former Canyon High kicker Matt George has signed a free-agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

GOLF

Future Matador: Kelley Carlson of Strathmore Union High in Lindsay, Calif., signed to play for the Northridge women’s golf team.

Um in seventh: UCLA golfer Alicia Um of Westlake High finished tied for seventh Wednesday at the Pac-10 Conference women’s championship. Um finished the three-round tournament with a six-over-par 222, seven shots behind medalist Jenna Daniels of Arizona.
