How touching it is that more than $130,000 has been contributed by Americans to finance Shao-Shao’s surgery to correct his congenital heart disease (“Chinese Boy Undergoes Critical First Surgery,” April 16). How ironic it is that in his overpopulated country that has a multibillion-dollar trade surplus with the U.S. there are not enough people who know or care about the boy in question to help finance their fellow countryman’s medical care.

Perhaps a fitting conclusion to this story would be for it to motivate Americans to exercise restraint when shopping and boycott Chinese goods until the Chinese learn greater human kindness and support their own citizens with the money made from trade with us.
