Harris Moyed; Founder of UC Irvine Microbiology Department

Harris S. Moyed, 72, founder of the microbiology department at UC Irvine College of Medicine. A native of Philadelphia, Moyed was educated at Pennsylvania Military College, the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Business School. He taught at Harvard and USC before going to Irvine in 1969 as the founding chairman of its microbiology and molecular genetics department. He also served seven years as executive associate dean of the UC Irvine College of Medicine. Moyed wrote more than 40 scientific papers, edited the Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, and held patents on processes for manufacturing hydrogen peroxide.
