Worker Changing Big A’s Bulbs Receives a Shock

A 43-year-old Huntington Beach man working on the Big A at Edison Field on Wednesday received a minor electrical shock as he was putting final touches on the stadium landmark in preparation for the opening-day game between the Angels and Yankees.

Bruno Balderrama, who was changing the halo’s bulbs, was treated by Anaheim paramedics and taken to UCI Medical Center for treatment.

Balderrama, an employee of Sasco Electric, was treated and released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon, said Kim Pine, UCI Medical Center spokeswoman.

“He’s a very lucky guy,” Pine said.

The Big A, a fixture for more than 30 years that once was in left field and now towers in the parking lot, has been refurbished. The Big A has new bulbs and the logo of its new corporate sponsor.

The 230-foot-high scoreboard has also been repainted--green and tan--to match the renovated and renamed stadium, which has been turned into a $117-million ballpark.
